Su from So

A touchy topic handled very well. Beautiful film-making. Starts off very loose with too much drinking and chit-chat and characterless acts, but then slowly, bit by bit things fall into place turning the plot into a serious drama. And yet, the narration is kept witty, sprinkled with humor throughout. A Kannada movie that resembled a Malayalam movie, with lush greenery and a small village setting mixed with local beliefs.

Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 2

Well, I was done for the day after seeing Part 1. But then I saw that Part 2 of the movie also was leaving Netflix on the same day! I had no choice but to continue seeing since there were many question marks after watching Part 1. So, with weary eyes, I continued. Part 2 seemed very slow at parts, and the editing could have been better. Some of the scenes lacked the same tenseness as it looked like the director wanted to make it light-hearted at times. And the slow-motion scenes were totally not needed plus the last scene where the 'hero' takes multiple revolvers/rifles/guns to kill the already-dead perpetrator. I guess at least about 15-20 minutes, the movie could have been shortened. But the casting director has done a fantastic job. Each actor suits the role he/she has been chosen for. The dialog is good but subtitles in English are too crude than what is actually spoken. The background score and music is good. Everyone has acted well, and the director has done a good job in ensuring people have their bit well.

Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 1

Since it rose to fame in the early 2000s, I had an inkling to see this movie but had heard about the extreme violence portrayed in it. Hence, had kept postponing and never prioritised. On Aug 3rd 2025, the movie was leaving Netflix, so I thought I might as well see it. Needless to say, the movie started off with bang-bang and kept on the same veins all through. As the narrator himself says in the beginning, it is a movie of rotten bastards. The movie is unlike anything that I had seen especially because it spans for over 6 decades. It goes on and on from father to son to son to son to son...etc. with no end. I will not be surprised if there will be a Part 3. In fact, it seems the entire movie lasted for almost 5.5 hours and that is the only reason it was broken down into 2 parts unlike other movies where sequel follows after first part is released. Maybe if it was released now, it'd be released on OTT platforms with seasons and episodes instead of a 2-part movie. But the movie is very much similar to many mafia movies I have seen like The Godfather, Satya, and pretty much the same dark, shady, crime, everyone killing everyone else.

Dhak Dhak

Saw this movie only because Netflix said it is based on true story but realized only in the end that this is a mistake by Netflix, since the entire movie is fictional. Casting is good but direction and acting is average. Some very 'loose' narration at certain points of the movie. Doesn't bore but somewhere somehow a 'punch' is lacking. Watchable once, the tale is slightly interesting. Good thing is there are bits and pieces here and there which is captivating like the lonely soldier making artwork, a widow of 29 years with just 1 year of marriage, the mountain road laborers tired of being away from families, etc..

Aap Jaisa Koi

Very slow movie. It starts off 'dirty' for first few minutes, then it becomes better and better until the turning point, after which it goes downward and downward until last 2 minutes of the movie when something is salvaged, and it can be easily guessed anyways. The script is not that great to make it a wow ending either. Easily "dismissable" movie.

Just go with it

A very average movie. Dialog filled with lot of double meanings which translates to 'comedy' for many film-makers. So, disgusting at times but ok-dokey at other times. Some of the dialog is witty and good timing. Dialog delivery is great by Adam and Jennifer. Although it is set in Hawaii, not much of the island is shown.

Yes Day

Nice fun movie to watch on a lazy Sunday. Very true in many aspects of parenting. It is one wild, wild day and a touching mother-daughter tale for probably most. Good storyline, great narration and witty dialog. Be ready for many OMGs!

Everest

I knew the whole thing before even I saw it since I have read and seen Into Thin Air. Much of the same emotions as I have depicted before. Film, of course, is well-taken and as natural as it could possibly be. For those of us, who haven't been to Everest, this, I guess, is as close as we can see it! So, many thanks for the movie! Once again, felt this, just like how I did when I last read and saw the other movie: Rob Hall - if only he had survived...

Migration

An animated movie with the daughter on a lazy Saturday! This movie was good, actually, some witty scenes and dialog. The animation was fabulous with all the great colors of Jamaica, the plot twisting and turning, but once or twice I felt the birds were venturing into places where there really was no need to. Nevertheless, a good watch.

Lucky Baskhar

Saw a con movie after a long. I really love con movies. And this one's right up there! From first scene to last, it is edge-of-seat thriller, making the audience always think pessimistically while, well, Baskhar turns out lucky! Superb narration, great acting and casting. Setting up the 1990s Bombay is as much real as one could. If one has seen (Harshad Mehta's strategy in) Scam 1992, they can relate more easily. It also reminded me of Swordfish, a movie I had seen perhaps in my teens.

MAD Square

The ROFL continues from prequel. While MAD was based on college premises, MAD Square is based on a wedding and the comedy of errors due to friends' interventions. Again, excellent direction, super humour and extremely witty. Certain inconsequential scenes also filled with full of mirth. Great way to pass a lazy Sunday!

Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil

Comedy from scene 1 till the last keeping audience on the edge of the seat to see what will befall next! At times, we feel why certain things were not kept as surprise but it is good it was not, since audience is one step ahead of the protagonists and hence expecting things to go wrong! Great dialog, wonderful comedy of errors and nice shift in balances with the story line. Great entertainer!

800

Based on life and career of Muthiah Muralidaran, this is a mediocre movie that re-shapes the history that spanned the spinner's life on how he climbed the ladder of Cricket. Good to know all of those things and glad that this movie was made indeed. If things had turned out well for him from the beginning, he could have achieved 1000 wickets instead of the 800 that he got. Anyways, movie is well-made but nothing great or inspiring or touching than the Man himself who fought against all odds to achieve what he did. Full kudos to Muthiah Muralidaran!

The Iron Claw

A movie about the Von Erich family. Just saw tag line 'True story' and started watching despite knowing nothing about it. First scene was about wrestling and I didn't want any more of it. However, the movie had me interested, and I ended up watching the whole thing. Very clean and neatly made movie, good casting, set in 1960s and 1970s in Texas. It is both fascinating and saddening that so many of them brothers died so early. Cannot imagine what the parents would have gone through to see their sons dying one after the other...Nice but sad tale. Thank Goodness, one of them sons lives on!

Best part about Hong Kong airport? Free screenings of movies while waiting at the gate to board the flight! Thus this movie with daughter. Seemed like a nice movie at the beginning, so went on to watch the whole thing. Had nothing else to do anyways. Dialog & setting is good, casting is good but rather far too much killing (or trying to kill) scenes for my liking. Watched a Jim Carrey movie after a really long time.

The Apprentice

Based on Donald Trump. Neatly made movie - capturing the significant parts. Casting is amazing because the parts played by the actors look very much like the real characters. Transition from being an apprentice to power-hungry is excellently portrayed by Trump. Worth a watch to know Trump's story. Nothing great though.

Inside Out 2

Well, wanted to watch this on the big screen considering we had watched the part 1 on the big screen (Paavani's first theater experience). Could not do that, but watched it on OTT platform. Same feelings as the first one - excellently made movie, narration and themed. Lots of wit and very much worth the watch.

Manjummel Boys

Initially I felt movie-making and narrative was average and slow-paced but then it kind of fell in place, weaving in and out of past and present, excellently portraying the bond between the friends, the loopholes in the law enforcement agencies, the locals wanting to help, etc.. A truly unbelievable true story of a guy who escaped quite literally from the jaws of death, and more importantly, of the guy who went inside the jaws of death to pull the former out. And for that, this movie should be watched.

Kishkindha Kaandam

Suspense. Dark. Tense. Set in the amidst of Kerala jungle. Fantastic narration and script of a complicated novel where things keep changing, starting from the case of a missing revolver. Casting and characterization is great. Acting by all is wonderful. Much like a dramatic climax, pretty much everything gets revealed at the end, which is good. But it should have been deduced instead of confessed. Otherwise, great movie.

Invictus

A Clint Eastwood movie. A true story. Great to see the leadership from Nelson Mandela to encourage the local (failing) sports team at the same time inspire citizens to stand by that team. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon have acted well but movie-making doesn't stand out or send goosebumps. Watchable for the event that happened post Apartheid.

Chhaava

Well, from beginning till end, its war-zone and killing and bloodshed and swords getting pierced into bodies. Not my type of movie. I heard good reviews of this movie, so thought I will watch it on the big screen but repented. The tale is good (especially considering it is true story) but the movie-making was average. For the sake of Sambhaji, you can view.

Moana 2

Another movie with daughter. Again, felt at times, I could've skipped it. Not that it was not good. Just ok-dokey. Wit's good, animation's wonderful, characters are good. In the beginning, tale is too hard to understand (just like Part 1), but then jigsaw parts fall in place slowly.

Barbie

Gave company for the daughter to watch this movie. Too chauvinistic - both on female and male side. Could have taken the gender bias out of the tale to keep it more child-friendly. Felt like more of a Man vs Woman war than a fun-filled, wit-filled kids movie. But showcasing the creator was a good idea. A movie that can be passed.
